Becoming More Yourself

Grace Lam, fashion stylist and podcaster, former Fashion Editor at Vogue China and menopause advocate.

What happens when the person you’ve become no longer quite matches the way you show up in the world?

Our bodies change. Our priorities shift. The things that once felt right may no longer fit — literally or figuratively. But change doesn’t have to mean becoming less of ourselves. Sometimes, it gives us permission to become more.

In this episode of the Let’s Check In Podcast, Suzie McErvale sits down with Grace Lam for a candid and energising conversation about menopause, confidence, style, identity and embracing change in midlife.

Drawing on her career in fashion, including her years at Vogue China, Grace challenges the idea that style is about trends, age or having the “right” body. Instead, she sees it as a way of expressing who we are now and an opportunity to experiment as we change.

Grace also shares her own experience of perimenopause and the brain fog and insomnia that led her to question why menopause remained largely absent from conversations within the fashion industry. Through her advocacy, she is helping challenge assumptions about what women experiencing menopause are supposed to look like and encouraging greater openness around this stage of life.

Together they discuss:

  • Why personal style comes from the soul, rather than simply following fashion

  • How what we wear can influence confidence and the way we feel

  • Finding your style when your body, identity or life is changing

  • Grace’s experience of perimenopause and why she became a menopause advocate

  • Why women shouldn’t become less visible as they get older

  • What Grace learned from her years at Vogue China

  • How small changes can help us step outside our comfort zones

  • Why becoming comfortable with discomfort can build confidence and resilience

  • Letting go of other people’s expectations and trusting your own

  • The question Grace is asking at 53: Who do I want to become?

At 53, Grace describes herself as more experimental than she was in her 20s, 30s or 40s. It’s a perspective that challenges some of the narratives women are given about ageing: that change has to mean restriction, retreat or becoming less visible.

Instead, this conversation asks what might happen if we approached change with curiosity.

It’s a conversation about menopause and style, but underneath both is something more universal: having the confidence to evolve, challenge what’s expected of us and give ourselves permission to become more of who we already are.
